The Anderson University Chorale

Dr. Richard L. Sowers, Music Director

Founded during the 1945-46 school year, the Anderson University Chorale began what has become a rich tradition of choral singing with national and international recognition.  Touring annually during spring break, the Chorale has visited almost every geographic region of the United States performing in a number of prestigious concert venues.

Performances of the Chorale and other Anderson University School of Music ensembles for the Emmy award-winning Candles and Carols Christmas program are broadcast each December throughout the United States and globally on DirecTV and the EWTN network. Since 1985 the Chorale has completed six European tours performing in Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, and Russia. Forty singers performed 14 concerts during a 23-day concert tour of Scandinavia and St. Petersburg, Russia, in May 2007.

The Chorale was chosen through anonymous tape auditions to perform in concert for two divisional conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and was chosen as only one of four university choirs to perform in concert for the National ACDA convention in Phoenix, AZ. Additionally the Chorale has performed in concert and as a demonstration choir for many music education events and conventions. The Chorale opened the 2004 ACDA Central Division Convention in Indianapolis and was honored by being selected to perform the world premiere of a new work commissioned by ACDA at that convention.

A significant part of the Chorale experience is the presentation of major choral/orchestral works. Annually the Chorale performs with the Anderson Symphony Orchestra and has appeared recently with the Carmel Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Richard L. Sowers is celebrating his 25th season as music director of the Chorale.
