Did You Know?

The Columbus Indiana Philharmonic serves our community by providing:

  • Strings instruction in area schools. Taught by Philharmonic musicians in eight Columbus elementary schools, with over 150 students in 2008-09.
  • Columbus Indiana Children's Choir (training young voices since 1996)
  • Adventure Concerts for third and fourth grades (performing for over 60,000 children since 1989)
  • Strings and choral summer camps (creating great musical adventures since 1991)
  • "Phil Harmonic" our resident penguin mascot (reaching countless young and forever young since 1996)
  • Scholarships - so that no child is ever turned away

Musically Speaking

Musically Speaking begins 50 minutes prior to most concerts. In these entertaining, spirited and informative conversations, Music Director and Conductor David Bowden and guest artists share their thoughts, ideas, insights and anecdotes -- a wonderful chance to become familiar with the performers and the great music played by the Philharmonic. Musically Speaking is open to all ticket holders.

Mostly Mozart
October 11, 2008 at 7:30 p.m.

2008 Brown Instrumental Scholarship winner, Elaine MacAslan opens the evening with Shostakovich's Concerto No. 2 in F major for Piano and Orchestra. For a very special "discovery " Véronique Mathieu, the Philharmonic's new Concertmaster (2008-09 season) is featured in Mozart's Concerto No. 5 for Violin and Orchestra. Talented Philharmonic Principals, Min Kyun Kim (Principal Guest Concertmaster), Tasha Warren, Vanessa Edwards, Sarah McKelvie and Todd Lockwood are also featured in a "Mostly Mozart" concert.  More information...                                                                                                                                                                  

Friday Night Live
Friday, November 21, 2008 at 7:30 p.m.
Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 and the Poulenc Organ Concerto will bring Dan McKinley back to Columbus to play the magnificent Aeolian-Skinner organ at First Christian Church.  Richard Strauss' Also sprach Zarathustra and Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams are on many "favorites" lists.

 

Unwrap the Joy
Sunday, December 7, 2008 at 3:00 and 7:00 p.m.
This year, the holiday concert is back on the first Sunday of December.  There will be surprises for the children and lots of old fashioned, traditional music to help you "Unwrap the Joy."

 

That's Entertainment
February 7, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

Steve Lippia's performance as "Ol' Blue Eyes" was a sell-out.  Ensure your seat for this concert by buying season tickets.  "That's Entertainment" will include music of Hoagy Carmichael and Cole Porter.

 

Glorious Voices
April 4, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

Missa Solemnis by Beethoven is a "giant" in choral/orchestra music.  The Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus will share the stage with 100 additional singers performing this joyful and uplifting masterpiece.

 

Romance of Barnabás
April 25, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

One of our favorite violinists, Barnabás Kelemen, caps the season when he returns to perform the Brahms Violin Concerto. This time he will be joined by his talented wife, Kati, and together they perform the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante.
